SC overturns order, national anthem not must in cinema halls

Overturning its earlier order, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said that playing the national anthem before screening movies in cinema halls was no longer mandatory. A Bench, led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, clarified that it is not mandatory to play the anthem before screenings in cinemas.

Playing of the anthem is directive, but showing respect is mandatory,” Chief Justice Misra orally observed.
